People dislike many things, but there are a few aspects of life that can be intolerable—being incorrect, being uncomfortable, and losing. Yet loss is a crucial and necessary aspect of walking with God. Isaiah 17 describes the loss His people will face.

In verse 4 it is mentioned, "And in that day the glory of Jacob will be brought low, and the fat of his flesh will grow lean." This is a fairly straightforward description of the loss God's children will face. Fat, simply put, is excess. When you make a habit of eating more than you need, fat is a byproduct. However, God does not necessarily mind excess and abundance, just not for people who refuse His command.

In verse 6, referring to a harvest being collected, it continues, "...as when an olive tree is beaten—two or three berries at the top of the highest bough, four or five on the branches of a fruit tree," declares the Lord God of Israel. God's justice and purification will be thorough, leaving very few behind.

Loss is a necessary part of God's plan for all His people. We will always pick up unnecessary possessions as we move through this world, and some of these possessions have the potential to turn our hearts away from God.

Would we rather lose possessions or lose our lives?
