Proverbs 23 warns against the subtle ways we seek to escape reality, especially through indulgence. “Do not look at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup and goes down smoothly. In the end, it bites like a serpent and stings like an adder” (v. 31-32).

Numbness is deceptive. It feels like protection, like a shield against pain, but in reality, it slowly erodes our ability to live with purpose. Whether through distraction, excess, or emotional detachment, numbness keeps us from confronting what truly matters. It dulls the sting of hardship, but it also robs us of wisdom, clarity, and growth.

Unchecked numbness leads to destruction. Proverbs 23:21 cautions, “For the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, and slumber will clothe them with rags.” While this speaks to physical indulgence, the principle extends far beyond food and drink. When we constantly seek escape—whether through mindless entertainment, unhealthy habits, or avoiding responsibility—we lose the discipline that leads to a fulfilled life. We drift instead of walking with purpose. The temporary relief of numbness is never worth the long-term cost of a life wasted in avoidance.

True peace is not found in numbing ourselves to reality but in surrendering to God’s wisdom. Proverbs 23:26 calls us back: “My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes observe my ways.” God doesn’t ask for half-hearted devotion or distracted obedience—He wants our full attention, our full presence.

The antidote to numbness is engagement: engaging with His truth, with our purpose, and with the life He has given us. Only then can we experience the richness of wisdom, joy, and true fulfillment.
