Do Your Feelings Matter?

Psalm 55 reminds us that feelings are not only valid but deeply significant. The psalmist, David, openly expresses his fear, anguish, and betrayal, giving voice to emotions many of us try to suppress. In doing so, he shows that feelings matter, not because they define truth, but because they bring us to a place of honesty before God.
In Psalm 55:4-5 (ESV), David writes,
"My heart is in anguish within me; the terrors of death have fallen upon me. Fear and trembling come upon me, and horror overwhelms me."
These words vividly capture the weight of David's emotions. His pain and fear are real, and he doesn’t shy away from them. Instead, he brings them to God, demonstrating that our emotions can be a powerful tool for deepening our relationship with Him.
What makes David’s response remarkable is that he doesn’t remain trapped in his feelings. In Psalm 55:16-17 (ESV), he shifts focus, saying:
"But I call to God, and the Lord will save me. Evening and morning and at noon I utter my complaint and moan, and he hears my voice."
David acknowledges his emotions but chooses to respond by seeking God. This shows that while feelings matter, they are not meant to dictate our actions. Instead, they can serve as a bridge to surrender and trust in God’s faithfulness.
Finally, David concludes in Psalm 55:22 (ESV):
"Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved."
This verse encourages us to bring our feelings to God and trust Him to carry the weight of our struggles. It’s a reminder that emotions, when surrendered to God, can lead to peace and renewal.
In essence, Psalm 55 teaches us that feelings do matter—they are part of our human experience and can draw us closer to God. However, they are not the final authority. When we choose to bring our emotions to Him, He meets us with His sustaining grace and unshakable presence.
